Soccer Foundation to visit Manchester UK –

By Jonathan Kanovsky

New York firefighters who survived the September 11 terror attacks are preparing to take on their Manchester counterparts for a charity football match. The FDNY Soccer Club will play the Manchester FD in a bid to raise 25,000 to benefit the Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Benevolent Fund.

The match takes place on August 19 at Salford City Stadium and was organised by Mike O’Neill, 47, crew manager at Eccles fire station.

Explaining how the match came about, he said: I was on holiday in New York for the St Patrick’s Day parade and I met up with some of their firemen and it went from there. I invited them over here for a football match and they said they’d love to.

The four-day trip will also double as a working holiday for the New York firefighters, who will pass on tips to their Manchester counterparts. Mike said: They’re doing half-an-hour before the game on their experiences of 9/11, how to tackle fire in high-rise buildings. It will be interesting to hear from them from a professional point of view.

Although the match kicks off at 4 p.m., live bands, stalls and displays will form part of a fund day which starts from 1 p.m. Mike added: It will be a great day and it’s for a good cause.

FDNY 1 NYPD 1 – FDNY Wins 5-4 on PK’s

By Jonathan Kanovsky

The FDNY regained the Mayor’s Cup after a hard-fought, thrilling contest this past Saturday that was decided on Penalty Kicks. Over 2,000 fans cheered on both teams at RedBulls Arena on a hot, muggy night.

The first half was tightly played with both sides feeling each other out, but the FDNY Club took the lead with less than a minute left in the first half on a beautiful cross to the 6 yard line which was headed in.

The NYPD Club came out on fire (sorry, boys) in the second half and completely dominated play. Chance after chance, however, was turned aside by a FDNY squad determined to avenge last year’s 3-1 defeat. The pressure proved to much and with 8 minutes left in the second half, a beautiful run down the left hand side was rewarded as an NYPD forward beat the FDNY goalie and tied the game. FDNY had one last chance in the final minutes but the NYPD came up with an incredible save.

The friendly came down to penalty kicks and the FDNY was perfect and ended up winning the Mayor’s Cup with a 5-4 advantage in PK’s.

Over $5,000 was raised for the FF Sergio Villanueva Soccer Foundation and the Widow’s and Orphan’s Fund. A huge thank you to the RedBulls staff for hosting this great contest.

4 Year Sergio Villanueva Scholarship recepient -Hofstra defender Richard Martinez (Highland, N.Y.) was named the Puerto Rico Men’s Soccer Player of the Year by Primera Hora newspaper for the 2010 calendar year.

Martinez earned the honor after a terrific season with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USL Conference of the United States Soccer Federation Division-2 Pro League. Grecians Fighting Relegation

By Jonathan Kanovsky

Our friends at Exeter City go into the final 2 games of the season 2 spots above relegation.

They could have secured their continued place in League One a few weeks back, but an own goal in added time took back 2 points.  We wish the Grecians well and look forward to seeing them fight for promotion next year!

Come on You Spurs –

While Torres is not conceding the battle for 4th place in the premeirship comes down to the last 3 weeks with Man City, Aston Villan, and Spurs fighting for 4th place. I will be rooting for Harry’s boys to finish strong as Man City could use the Silver Fox in goal as their top keeper is out after suffering a shoulder injury last week
